My trials and tribulations

Hi all ,this blog is going to show some of the tricks in my life ,Enjoy !

gussets added

Tower base at 3m high

Pulleys setup for lufting wire ,basically to throw the cable over to side of post so handle doesn't hit the girder

And again on the other side which goes to the tower

In all its raw glory

Left to do now are the mounting holes in the base and the bottom retaining plate for the tower

A little bit more to the base

60 mm rsa for the lattice work
Base tack welded for the moment, will cut some gussets to go from upright to floor

There will be a few more pieces to go in as lattice when i have the cable route sorted for the tilt over mechanism .The pulleys need to be arranged to keep the cable in the middle of drum on winch ....so thats the next job.

Tower base (its a hobby)

Ok ive been here 3 years now, well second time round .Ive been saying im doing this tower so here we go !
The base is made from 2 of 254x104 @ 3.3 m rsj with 100 x 20 fb making the hinges
Ill lattice this up to hold them together
At a little over 3m this is larger than a standard versatower base by maybe 1200mm so the top is tapered to allow the head end to still come down to ground also will make the tower near 80ft .The bottom section im going to extend by 1200mm this will keep the pivot below half so tilting will still be ok
And the winch will be about 1100 mm of the floor
Well thats it for now till next install

retention head

Hi all
A little issue with the oil build up in the old retention head has forced my hand ,so I've made a new one with out the caption area of the old one .Made from 310 stainless .
New head inside out view

New retention head outside in

Old Retention head has holes in that let the oil go outside of firebox ,there is a small hole underneath which i have opened up but it still makes up and blocks ,also new head has a more aggressive swirl.

How the fire looks now

Metering pump

Ok so here we are using a metering pump for the oil .The pump is off a conventional oil burner running a lot slower maybe 50 rpm ,the motor is a 200w kids scooter motor dc .
Speed controller is a homebrew PWM based around a 555 timer circuit with a mosfet final .
After using the syfphon set up last year this set up blows it out the water ,start up is instant,no waiting for the venturi effect to bring the oil into play .
Of course its early days going to have to see how the winter goes and see if its reliable .This year i got the wood burner all ready for back up .I really dont want a year like last ,in between heat sources that sure did suck. All my spare time was installing the new system and not cutting wood .....yep it wasn't a comfy winter last season .

More efficiency

Well i scrapped the heat exchanger idea and bought an old potterton 70/90 this runs at 85.3% which is far better than the 10-20 % i was getting with the wood burner. My burner is mounted just needs water and the constant level device .Could of made wood burner work better ,but I'm moving further away from a quick revert back to wood so here is the new route.

Plumed into wood burner flu .Also made the bend at top flanged so this will be the last time it has to come off  .plenty of Insulation will be all round the flu .Eventually ill put up a platform to aid in chimney cleaning which I'm hoping is going to be minimal
